How Charter Schools Work

Publicly Funded, Independently Governed

Charter schools like EVA are public schools - we accept all students, we cannot charge tuition, and we are funded by state and local education dollars. What makes us different from a traditional district school is that we have the autonomy to design our own curriculum and model (the immersion program) while still being accountable to NC DPI and state law.

EVA is authorized by the NC State Board of Education and operates under a charter renewed every five years. We are audited annually and publicly accountable for student outcomes.

How EVA is Funded

State funds follow each enrolled student to EVA from the NC Department of Public Instruction.

Local Supplement

Charlotte-Mecklenburg adds a local per-pupil supplement for charter schools in CMS boundaries.

Title I and other federal education grants support students with high need.

Voluntary family donations and foundation grants support enrichment programs.

Optional Fees & Activities

While core instruction is always free, EVA does offer some optional paid activities. No student is excluded from any core program due to inability to pay optional fees - assistance is always available.
