Curriculum Overview

What We Teach

Core Subjects & Programs

Every subject at EVA is taught with both language proficiency and deep content knowledge in mind. We align with NC State Standard Course of Study while layering in immersion-specific strategies.

Mathematics

i-Ready adaptive instruction plus NC Math Standards. Taught in both Mandarin and English across K–8. Data-driven differentiation ensures every student is challenged and supported.

English Language Arts

Reading Workshop and Writing Workshop frameworks. NC ELA Standards. Emphasis on reading complex texts, evidence-based writing, and academic vocabulary development.

Mandarin Language Arts

Chinese reading, writing, listening, and speaking developed sequentially K–8. Aligned to HSK and ACTFL proficiency frameworks. Character writing from Grade 1.

Science

NC Science Standards with NGSS alignment. Inquiry-based learning, hands-on labs, and STEM integration. Units taught in Mandarin in lower grades, English in upper grades.

Social Studies

NC Social Studies Standards. Global perspective woven throughout. Units on Chinese history, geography, and culture integrated alongside American and World history.

Physical Education

NC Healthful Living Standards. Daily movement, cooperation, and fitness. Taught in English with Mandarin vocabulary reinforcement. All K–8 students have PE weekly.

Visual Art

NC Arts Standards. Projects integrate Chinese art traditions - calligraphy, paper cutting, ink painting - alongside contemporary visual arts. All grade levels.

Music

General music education with bilingual repertoire. Students learn songs in Mandarin, English, and Spanish. Recorder in Grades 3–5. Choir available in Grades 6–8.

STEM Enrichment

Coding, robotics, engineering challenges. Grades 3–8 rotate through dedicated STEM lab. Connects to Math and Science NC Standards through project-based learning.

Assessment

How We Measure Growth

EVA uses multiple measures to understand each student's academic trajectory. We believe assessment should inform instruction - not replace it.

  • i-Ready Diagnostics - Math and Reading, 3x per year
  • NC EOG / EOC - State assessments Grades 3–8
  • ACTFL Oral Proficiency - Mandarin speaking assessment
  • Classroom formative assessments - Ongoing, teacher-designed
  • Portfolio assessments - Especially for Mandarin writing development
