NC DPI Growth Recognition
Consistent Academic Growth
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction measures schools on "growth" - whether students learn more in a year than expected based on their starting point. EVA has earned a "Met" or "Exceeded" expected growth designation every year on record, including its very first year before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bilingual Literacy Milestones
EVA students hit measurable language proficiency benchmarks at each grade level. Here is what our students can typically do in Mandarin at key milestones.
End of Grade 2
Novice-High / Intermediate-Low (ACTFL)- Greet, introduce self, describe family and classroom in Mandarin
- Read simple illustrated texts with familiar vocabulary
- Write 3β5 sentences with Pinyin and beginning character use
- Understand and follow classroom directions in Mandarin
End of Grade 5
Intermediate-Mid / Intermediate-High (ACTFL)- Converse on familiar academic and personal topics
- Read grade-level Chinese texts with comprehension
- Write multi-paragraph essays with 500+ characters
- Present research findings in Mandarin to class
End of Grade 8
Intermediate-High / Advanced-Low (ACTFL)- Engage in debate, discussion, and academic argument in Mandarin
- Read and analyze authentic Chinese literature and articles
- Write formal essays and research papers in Chinese
- Qualify for high school AP Chinese (often bypassing Levels 1β2)

EVA 8th graders typically place into AP Chinese or Level 4 at CMS high schools, saving years of language study and giving them advanced standing.
