How to Volunteer

EVA relies on a strong community of parent and community volunteers. Whether you can give one hour or ten, there is a meaningful role for you here.

Parent volunteers at East Voyager Academy

Before You Volunteer

All volunteers who work directly with students must complete a brief approval process required by NC charter school policy:

Complete volunteer form - Available at the front office or by emailing [email protected].

Background check - A brief background screening is required for volunteers who will have direct, unsupervised contact with students (usually processed within 3–5 business days).

Check in at the front office - Each time you volunteer on campus, sign in and receive a visitor badge.

Volunteer Categories

🏫

Classroom Helper

Flexible - 1-2 hrs/week

Support teachers with small-group instruction, reading practice, art projects, and centers. No Mandarin required - English-track classrooms especially appreciate extra hands. Teachers love having a second adult in the room!

Skills needed: Patience, warmth, reliability.

Event Support

Event-based (evenings/weekends)

Help organize and run EVA's signature community events: Lunar New Year Celebration, Spring Cultural Festival, Book Fair, Back to School Night, and more. Event volunteers are the backbone of our community spirit.

Skills needed: Organization, energy, teamwork.

Garden Club

Saturdays, 2 hrs/month

EVA has a small campus garden used for science instruction and fresh produce. Garden Club volunteers help students plant, tend, and harvest. A wonderful way to connect with kids and nature simultaneously.

Skills needed: Love of gardening, outdoor comfort.

Literacy Program

45 min/week, scheduled

Our one-on-one reading program pairs trained volunteer readers with Grades K–3 students who need extra reading practice. This 15-minute-per-student session happens weekly and makes a profound difference in early literacy.

Skills needed: Love of books, patience with young readers. Training provided.

Cultural Arts

Project-based, 2-4x/year

Do you paint, do calligraphy, play a traditional instrument, or practice a cultural art form? Share it with our students! We love bringing community artists - especially those with Chinese, Latino, or other cultural expertise - into classrooms.

Skills needed: Any cultural art form. All backgrounds welcome.

STEM Mentor

1 hr/week or project-based

Work alongside students in our STEM lab on coding, robotics, or engineering projects. Mentors with backgrounds in technology, engineering, medicine, or science are especially valued by our middle school students.

Skills needed: STEM background, enthusiasm to work with students.
